“Faith In Action” (FIA)
Spring Break Service Adventure and Retreat

To the Applicant: Thank You for your interest in participating in “Faith In Action” 2017. For over 16 years young people from our Diocese have been putting their Faith In Action through participation in FIA. By being part of FIA 2017 YOU will have the opportunity to put your faith into action, learn about yourself, grow in faith and become more aware of and better equipped to respond to the justice needs in our world and community. Our experience will take us to the working poor, the homeless and the outcast. We will live, pray, work and play in Christian community. We will spend each morning and evening in prayer, work 6-8 hours a day and share meals, evening activities, have fun and grow in faith. This is an experience that YOU will never forget. Requirements: Applicants must be in 9th-12th grade. FIA will take place
March 12-15, 2017. Check in will be at 3:00 pm on Sun., March 12. On Wed, Mach 15 we will conclude with a prayer service and a brief closing presentation. Parents and families are encouraged to join us for closing prayer and presentation at 5:15 pm. We expect to be done about 6:30 pm on the 15th. All FIA applicants will be expected to participate in the full experience of all 3 ½ days. You may not join late or leave early.
Travel: We will be staying at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Church in Ankeny, 510 E. 1st St. and car pooling (with adult drivers) to and from our work sites in the Des Moines metro area.
Accommodations: We will sleep in classrooms on the floor. You may bring a single size air mattress (a limited number are available for borrowing)
Meals: All meals will be provided as part of the service experience. (Dinner is on your own on Wed. the 15th after we are done around 6:30 pm) You may bring snacks to share with the whole group (box of crackers, cookies, granola bars etc.). No food will be allowed in the sleeping rooms, we’ll have a place in the youth room for community snacks.
Cost: Cost for the Faith In Action experience is $80. (checks made payable to All Saints). Half of the fee is due with the application. The remaining half is due March 1st (or you may pay the full amount with the application if you prefer). Financial aid is available. Application Deadline: We will begin accepting applications on November 30. Applications must be received in the parish youth office no later than February 1, 2017. Space is limited so we will be accepting applications on a first come, first serve basis this year. We have filled to capacity the past few years.
Examples of Work sites: (this list is subject to change) St. Mary’s Family Center, Habitat for Humanity, Hope Ministries, Connection Café, DMARC Food Pantry, Free Store, Courage League, St. Joseph’s Family Center, Bidwell Riverside plus potentially a few new sites this year.
Chaperons: Diocesan regulations require that we have at least one chaperon for every 8 youth, so we will need parents (or other adults 21 and over) to chaperon and serve as drivers. Please indicate if available on the application. Chaperons will need to complete a background check and the “Protecting God’s Children” video training required by the Diocese.
